Treatment options for menopause range from lifestyle changes to hormone therapy. Technically, menopause is reached a year after the final period, which usually happens around age 51 in the United States. However, signs and symptoms can start before that year mark.
The signs and symptoms of menopause are usually enough for women to know they’re going through it. A simple blood test can check hormone levels, such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estrogen. FSH levels increase and estrogen levels decrease during menopause. A blood test for thyroid-stimulating hormone may also be recommended since hypothyroidism can cause similar symptoms. Menopause itself doesn’t need medical treatment, but treatments focus on relieving symptoms and preventing chronic conditions associated with aging.
Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone replacement therapy are effective in relieving menopausal symptoms. Depending on lab results and medical history, a hormone replacement practitioner can help manage symptoms.
Estrogen is a hormone produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands. There are three types of estrogen in the female body: estrone, estradiol, and estriol. Their levels decrease significantly during menopause. Symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, trouble sleeping, dryness in the vagina, bladder problems, difficulty concentrating, and anxiety. Some symptoms may improve over time. However, the absence of estrogen increases the risk of diseases like heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, most estrogen prescribed today is synthetic, which is not natural to the body. It’s better to use natural bio-identical estrogen, as the body accepts it better. Synthetic estrogen has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. On the other hand, natural estrogen, when combined with natural progesterone, can protect against breast cancer, similar to how it protects against uterine cancer.
Low testosterone happens when a man’s body doesn’t produce enough testosterone. In the United States, around 13 million men may have low testosterone, but only 5-10% of them seek treatment. Symptoms can start in a man’s 30s or 40s and most often by their fifties. The good news is that there are treatment options available for low testosterone.
Testosterone is a crucial hormone for men. It’s responsible for developing male characteristics during puberty and is essential for sexual function, energy, mood, and body composition. Testosterone helps the male body build protein and is vital for a regular sex drive, physical stamina, and erections.
Testosterone also plays a role in various metabolic functions, including bone formation, liver function, prostate growth, and blood cell production in the bone marrow. Testosterone levels vary depending on age. If your levels are below 300 ng/dL, your doctor may diagnose you with low testosterone. While a blood test is needed to determine your testosterone level, men should always consult their doctor if they experience symptoms.
The signs and symptoms of low testosterone can be challenging to distinguish from regular age-related changes or other medical conditions. Often, the symptoms of low testosterone are subtle and similar to those caused by other medical conditions. This can make diagnosing low testosterone complicated. Symptoms are frequently attributed to “getting older,” but the underlying issue may be low testosterone. Low testosterone can occur alongside other common medical conditions. Bioidentical hormones are artificial hormones similar to those produced by the human body. These hormones include estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. They are used as a treatment for people whose own hormones are low or unbalanced. Some people benefit from bioidentical hormones, but there are treatment risks.
Bioidentical hormones are processed hormones designed to mimic the hormones made by your body’s glands. Taking bioidentical hormones can help people who experience symptoms of low or unbalanced hormones. This is often the case for people experiencing symptoms of peri-menopause, menopause, or andropause.

Premarin is derived from the urine of pregnant horses, which contains significant amounts of estrogen-like chemicals. The Women’s Health Initiative, which linked certain forms of hormone replacement therapy with an increased risk of thromboembolic disease, stroke, and breast cancer, utilized Premarin and progestin, Provera. Thankfully, pellet therapy never disappeared and is now recognized as a comprehensive approach to managing symptoms associated with hormone deficiency.

It involves placing small implants under the skin that consistently release bioidentical hormones identical to those naturally found in the body. The staff is wonderful and very helpful. However the NP we saw was dismissive and not friendly. She documented a complete physical exam when she did not lay a hand on my husband to examine. She ordered a huge number of lab tests she did not ask us about nor did he need. We declined all but the one we needed but some were done anyway. This type of practice gives medicine a bad name.

I want to take the time to thank the whole staff at the San Antonio location for their genuine care. I had to go there today for a walk in appt and was blown away at how quickly they got me in to be seen. Not only was I in and out of the office in less than an hour, I was sent for a CT scan that was pre scheduled for me before I even walked out of the office and was seen upon arrival to the imagining location. I was blown away by how comfortable he made me feel as a new patient. He was extremely knowledgeable about my numerous medical conditions. He was very thorough in his examination and diagnostic criterion. He was even open to my own opinions, which led to making me feel like an active participant in my own care, unlike other providers who think you should always follow their medical advice. From start to finish, the staff who check you in, to the nurse in the back, they were all outstanding and deserve 5 stars! Dr Baker at inovative urgent care provides excellent service. She takes time to explain treatments and options and listens to her patients. The only complaint is the do not have contracts with insurance to provide injection of medication. Vaccines etc and bill insurance you have to pay cash fir these services.

I love these guys. Blood draw was painless. Doctor addresses all concerns without being rude and shoving you out the door like some docs. They keep up to date and share new info. I loved my SA doctor office but I just can’t deal with the drive there and back anymore. I’ll miss him but I feel totally comfy with the Bandera office.

I really love this establishment, their doctors are great and I appreciate that they take the time to listen to you and give you positive feedback. They really give you the "Old School" service, with the new school knowledge. They take the time to listen to you and offer suggestions to help you improve your health. I can’t go on enough about how satisfied i am with their doctors. Specifically i suggest Dr. Nelson… she is awesome! I truly get the feeling that she cares about the patient and loves the work that she does. I appreciate the followups, and the open lines of communication via the portal. You can really feel that she wants to provide her patients excellent medical care. Additionally i enjoy using the teleheath option online for appointments via webcam or cell phone camera. This is extremely helpful when you don’t have time to visit the clinic. This works great for me when im traveling for work.

I’ve been with innovative since 2022 and it’s always nice to have great providers and great staff at the offices. Hyun Nelson, NP. Always has a bright affect and is very kind and thorough. She gives options and gives advice for different pricing. The only flaw is that I have to book every six weeks rather than 12. Staff at the office know what they’re doing and make phone calls very simple. Their website is simple and can use a little tweaking. The phlebotomist is eccentric and very funny. Overall great! 🤪

Dr. Schanen, from what I can tell briefly speaking to him, seems to be a VERY hardworking and dedicated man. He listened to my issues (while he had patients waiting on him, I might add, this is testimony to his dedication to quality) I had during my experience with his staff and unprofessional conduct during and after my visit, he was attentive and showed concern about such, and even offered to refund me my money. I told him to keep it because I like how he does business. He cares about his patients and is OBVIOUSLY passionate about what he does. He wouldn’t have all those letters at the end of his name if he wasn’t! I am confident he will address my issues with his staff and continue to serve the community with quality healthcare for decades to come!

This clinic is amazing! We connected him via messenger to assist us with the app for a consult. She was having a severe allergic reaction and needed mediation ASAP. Went in today with THREE sick kids for the 1st time. Clean, friendly & efficient....best I've seen in San Antonio! Everyone from the front desk to the nurses were so kind to my whole family. Schanen was quick but thorough & my kids loved him! Called in all of our meds for us & following up with lab tests via email. What could have turned into a nightmare of a day for any mom was quickly countered by our experience here. We were in & out fast with everything we needed. We are accepting HMO patients effective November 15, 2025. HMO patients must contact their HMO plan to change the PCP listed to one of our clinicians before their appointment. Our standard fee is $259 per visit. We accept cash, credit, debit, FSA, and HSA cards, as well as offer CareCredit financing for your convenience. We also offer low-cost in-house labs.
We offer an online self-scheduling tool that makes booking appointments extremely easy. We also encourage you to schedule your follow-up visit during your discharge visits. If you didn’t take the time to plan your follow-up visit, it might delay your medical care. Please note that all medication refills require an appointment; no exceptions apply. Photo ID, insurance card, payment method, current medication/supplement list, and any recent labs or imaging reports. Please complete all online forms at home before your visit. Alternatively, you can arrive 30 minutes early to complete the forms in our office. All forms must be completed before all visits, including follow-up and telemedicine visits. You may be asked to reschedule your appointment if you do not complete the forms.
To cancel your appointment, click the appointment confirmation link you received in your email or text message. Everyone with an appointment receives email and text appointment confirmations. You can also log in to your patient portal to cancel or reschedule your appointment. To respect everyone’s time, a $75 cancellation fee applies if you cancel within 24 hours or fail to attend your appointment. You’ll need to pay this fee before we can reschedule your next appointment.
You can review your results on your patient portal once your clinician has posted them. This is usually performed within 48 hours of your visit, but it may take longer over the weekends and holidays.
